Last Podcastro of the Year (fuck the OX give us the Tiger)

To celebrate how little shit we give about astrology and other such numbskullery we present the last show of the year.

http://www.archive.org/details/TheLanParty12-30-0989.1FmWidrKalamazoo

We had a call today from a listener who felt they made music which could contribute to the show and we of course said yes. If you make music and would like us to showcase it on the show and it fits in with the kind of bile we usualy play, well then send it our way. Lanpartywidr@gmail.com

"Why I Am So Wise, Why I Am So Clever, And Why I Write Such Good Songs..."

Carl King also known as Dr. Zoltan Øbelisk has released a new album titled, Why I Am So Wise, Why I Am So Clever, And Why I Write Such Good Songs...

It is a clusterfun progressive concoction of Odd-Tuplets.

Highly recommended, and if you've been paying attention we support music that is legitimately free, and this is no exception. http://www.drzoltan.com/files/contact.php Go there and download it from the artist, and if you dig it you can send him some money. Things that are free still cost quite a bit of money and what better way to say, hey I want more, and short of handing him bricks of gold in person, there is no more direct way than Paypal.

His previous releases are also available for free consumption. Enjoy.

Sincerely,
Raul Podcastro

A Saturnalia Miracle

For many years now I've been sending letters to Santan asking him if he could please kill Britney Spears. This year it seems he finally got to my letter, but perhaps the blood which I used to write the letter ran a bit, because instead of Britney Spears he killed Brittany Murphy, but you know what I'll take what I can get.

It is a Saturnalia Yule tide miracle indeed!

In case Santan reads this post I would like to say that the assholes that are mourning the passing of this fucking gape can be next!

Continual Fail. We provides it.

Facebook is, I suspect, a hunk of old news to all of us internet veterans. However I recently became aware of Lamebook, a website cataloging all of the facebook failures and hilarity going on throughout the world. Some of these entries are lessons in passive aggression. Most are facepalm worthy. Enjoy!

I have a few more sites cataloging similar failures as well, but I am poorly educated on what is popular on the internet these days so I will refrain for fear of turning into That Guy that finds out about things two years later. BUT...I can list them if requested.

Fuck Octo-mom, we're all about the Octo-cast

I PISS MY SELF ON A DAILY BASIS

This being no exception, mTV must of in between producing awards shows for things they don't show or produce and reality shows about guidos (Jersey Shore) must of found some time on the side to sign the papers allowing Sam Kieth to release his amazing The Maxx cartoon adaptation of his comic to an on demand type of DVD release.

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Maxx-The-Complete-Series/13105

Order yours today before mTV realizes The Maxx is good and it's reminding of a standard they no longer aspire to and don't want to since it's far cheaper to buy a house for retarded nitwits and put cameras everywhere, watch them pee them selves and then edit it into a drama.

I'm still amazed mTV does not have awards for reality shows. Perhaps that's their high ground?

An oversight on my part...

So I realized that this whole time we've had the blog I have neglected to add MC Frontalot's site to the list of free music. MC Frontalot's music is somewhere right in the middle of OUR PERFECT FORMAT. If you like the show I dont see how you couldn't like Frontalot. That said, he offers his mp3's for free and all his songs are exceedingly good. Enjoy!

Enthusiasm as a replacement for knowledge....

I'm going to be covering the Reggae Revolution show for our good friend Selector Jonathan on Tuesday, Dec 15th from 10pm to midnight. This means that next week you'll get four hours of Fidel Podcastro (formerly DJ Starscream, final name to be decided).
I will do my darnedest to record both shows and get them up here so we can all have a laugh at my expense (since what I know about reggae is rather...limited).

Anyway, hope you listen in tommorow night/wednesday morning!

p.s. - Russian Circles is playing at The Strutt on Wednesday. This is jaw-dropping for several reasons; an amazing band comes to Kalamazoo VERY rarely, the venue is decent, and its only 12 dollars. Do yourself a favor and come check it out if'n you're able.

That's it, so turn off your favorite TWIZTID cd and turn up the jamms from Kalamazoos least favorite non-monetarily compensated DJ's who do it for the love of the fart, art, bart,....anyhoo I'm ramblin. Yes we're back and with some hiccups, some laughing fits and in general a sad realization that Donatello was voiced by Corey Feldman, thus a new name must be found for DJ Donatello. Submit your concoctions here, maybe if we're lucky by next week that stink of Faildman will be washed away and the horror can come to a swift conclusion.

The existance of a local, badass Tumbler makes me happy.

I was able to meet the local guy who built a drivable Tumbler replica in his garage. I first read about him in Popular Mechanics magazine and the Kalamazoo Gazette had an article about him a few weeks ago. Its always great to discover things like this locally.
His youtube channel can be found here; there are now videos posted of it driving!

Twitter contributes to the conversation?

Who could of guessed that when I made a LanPartyTwitter account it would ever be of any benefit to anyone, but today is that day. Today two of the people we follow posted things that are of great value and interest to me and to anyone else that is a fan of awesome, and of course if you listen to our show then you are no doubt a connoisseur of awesome. So without further jibb-jabber here is the shit to make your face explode...

First by way of MCLars who is a staple of The LANParty playlist, comes this gem. The Wesley Willis CD Repository I nor I suspect anyone else knew just how prolific Mr. Willis was in his lifetime. This is the end all archive of Wesley Willis work, including studio, and live albums, even some interview clips. We can all thank Jello Biafra for bringing Wesley to our attention, and now we can all enjoy him to an extent that only the magick of the internets can provide.

Second by way of our good friends at Applied Intellect and The Geek Group our local computer whizzes, comes this link to a great deal from Direct2Drive.com to celebrate their 5 year anniversary, you can now purchase over 50 games for 5 bucks each. It's important now to mention that we're not talking about like tetris or mahjong or something of the like, we're talking Assassins Creed: Directors Cut, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Bioshock, Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, etc...

Also we haven't talked about it in depth but I don't see any reason to wait, this coming tuesday The LAN Party presents GAPES (great acting person entertaining sonically) a whole show dedicated to bile and sometimes triumph and memes that come from people stepping out of their comfort zone and putting themselves out there for rabid mockery.

Black Internet

I have no desire to spend lots of time advocating for the awesome that is the internet, I mean lots of us disagree on how the internet should be, many of us for example want the government to read our emails, to screen what we download or upload, monitor the sites we visit and prohibit us from visiting sites that the MPAA or RIAA feel are inappropriate. I know when I get on the internet my number one concern is which of the sites I visit on a daily basis will be blocked by the ISP today, due to lawsuits pending, and I know like all of us I am looking forward to the day when our cable providers put an extra fee on the bill that is listed as the Download Tax. I mean I think that's great, I personally can't think of anything more wise than to have extra fees, illegal taxes and most importantly censorship. I mean that's what the internet was built upon, monitoring, everyone needs to be watched controlled, all of our keystrokes logged, it's unpatriotic to think otherwise.

So with that in mind I suggest you visit http://openinternet.se/ and if you so choose to support these horrible people, well I won't be held responsible for the horror that is unleashed upon the world.

I know we live in a world where the Happy Birthday song is owned by somebody and so singing it in a public place is illegal unless you pay, and I personally think that's great, I also think it's great that any open source non profit freeware that is able to read MP3 files (which if you didn't know is also under a patent), should pay large amounts of money to IBM.

However if you are a Satan worshiping communist pirate from one of those Blue States of Liberal Libertarian ANARCHY then you no doubt support The Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Shame on you if you do! Shame!

Great Acting Persons Entertaining Sonically (GAPES)

As you may be aware we have been throwing around the idea of doing a whole show dedicated to GAPES. There are of course classic GAPES like
Shatner and Nimoy, Macho Man, Hulk Hogan, Mr.T, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal, etc...
However we don't want to just rely on classic GAPES, and so if you have a good lead on GAPES let us know will ya! You don't have to find it your self, if you do that's great, but if you just have a feeling that maybe Corey Feldman at some point picked up a microphone in a sacrilegious way, well...

We will track it down, none are safe, none can hide!

Creative Commons tastes better.

Creative Commons is awesome, if you are interested in it, you can read about it here http://creativecommons.org/about/ I highly encourage it.

We at the LAN Party enjoy Creative Commons very much and if you listen to the show, then you know that we try to feature as many artists as possible who give away their music for free. Creative Commons let's you do that, but it also gives you control over specific rights like weather or not you want your music which you give away taken and then used in a Flo Rida song and then watching as they make tons of money off it and don't in anyway have to pass on the same generosity.

So with that in mind we share another website that shares Free Creative Commons music. http://sutros.com/ If you are an artist throw your stuff up there, embed the crap out of it, and get some free exposure. If you're a fan, go explore, we will no doubt find something fitting for the show, in fact we already have, listen for it next week.

Free Music and Supporting Artists.

As you may know we love free music, and part of it is that we know we're not giving money to undeserving middle men in suits who think of bands as commodities to be shuffled around on a large checkers board. The other reason is that word of mouth works far better and is more profound and powerful if it comes with music you can take with you and listen to at your leisure. Metallica never figured that out, and neither did most of the bands addicted to label cartels, however smaller bands knew this long ago and with the help of the internet are exploring ways to get the music to anyone who may want to hear it, creating pools of support that then become possible tour locations. So with that in mind let me share a couple of bands who are giving away their music for free just recently and both trying different methods.

First is a band from Portland called Wax Fingers, http://www.myspace.com/waxfingersband they are a predominately instrumental post rock band, and they have decided to give away their first CD through FileFactory, you can find the link on their MySpace blog. This is a great method, because it's free, it's convenient, and I along with many other people who actually bought their CD will forward the link to our friends with ease and joy. Giving the power to the people, to choose, to sample and to know, and at the end to be in control of what we listen to. Look for Wax Fingers to release new material soon :)

Second is a heavier band from Boston called Constants, http://www.myspace.com/constants ,they have just released a new album called The Foundation, The Machine, The Ascension, you can get it on triple Vinyl or CD or you can download it for free. Yes you heard right, and why would a band let you download their newest album they spent a long time working on for free, well gimmesound.com for every song downloaded gives the artists % of the ad revenue, but all you have to do is go and download the music for free. http://www.gimmesound.com/About.cfm you can read more about their plan there. You can also just go here and download the new album from Constants http://www.gimmesound.com/constants/ and then explore the rest of the site.
I also hope that 09.16.09 TBA Kalamazoo / Grand Rapids / Lansing MI gig happens in Kalamazoo :)

Good hunting!

Jon Lajoie straight talk.

If you work 3rd shift, or the tape deck is broken, or the dial to change the station is encrusted and stuck on 89.1FM WIDR, or perhaps if you listen willingly to our show, then you may have noticed we tend to latch on to popular media events and exploit them through mashups, remixes and weird covers. This was no less true when Michael Jackson died, and we played tons of random Michael Jackson related media to celebrate the mans life and music, we however didn't really give a shit. However I don't think we ever truly expressed why we cared so little, but folks smarter than us and far more eloquent stepped up and expressed it for us, and so without further ah doo doo, Jon Lajoie making a good point.

Jon has a great album out on iTunes called You Wan't Some of This? You can also enjoy more of his music and skits on YouTube or http://www.jonlajoie.com/home.html

Free Killer Cuts

So while I was playing Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 some people were playing a game called Killer Instinct. While talking on a forum about fighting games it came up and I had to look it up, after watching a few videos which featured some of the 20 hit ultra combos, I realized that I had made the right decision. However the video I watched had a song under it, and after a bit of digging found out that along with the game you originaly got a soundtrack CD called Killer Cuts. Then after some more digging I found a download online, this turned out to be a dud, or rather someones sick joke, as the tracks were in WMA format, it was promptly deleted with a sneer. Then after some more digging I came across Radio KRUD. A post from 2005 had just what I was looking for, all 16 tracks with individual direct links. So without further foreplay here is the link, the post is interesting, but the climax is at the bottom of the page, scroll with care.
Killer Cuts All music by Robin Beanland & Greame Norgate, Mr. Norgate being no stranger to The LAN Party. I am still on the look out for the follow up titled Gold Cuts, if you have leads, post em here.

Iron Monkees

Thanks to modern technology and the vastness of the internet, many people have started combining songs in all kind of clever ways. These mashups bring lots of joy to us, and we love to pass it on to our listeners, and we don't mind giving a preview of things to come.

And so with that in mind here is an excellent mashup of Iron Maiden and The Monkees by the very talented DJ Schmolli - The Trooper Believer.

You can find more mashups of his at http://djschmolli.wordpress.com/, AudioPorn Central and http://www.mashup-industries.com/. I also suggest exploring these sites further as there is tons of free music floating around, just waiting to be grabbed and sucked through your ears.

Free music

Creative Commons agreements are wonderful; there is literally no end to the amount of legitimately free music to explore.

With that in mind, I've found some excellent sites I've been browsing for material, for both the show and my own musical meanderings.

Mr. Hicks

I discovered Bill Hicks well after he had passed away in 1994, and so I never got to see him live, however his stand up somehow still to this day does not seem dated, and perhaps more relevant than ever. I only post this because I have seen and heard as much Bill Hicks as anyone mortal could, but I had never seen his last appearance on the Late Show. At the time Letterman bowed to his corporate masters who were quite strongly pro life and didn't think too highly of Bill. Unfortunately Letterman took the asshole way and cut out the stand up of Bill from the show, this was Bill's last appearance and at the time he was already quite sick. Bill later commented on this act of censorship, and was baffled, because if you know his stand up, he had already cut it down to the least offensive thing possible, and he had run it past Letterman so nothing he said was a surprise. It's embarrassing that it took Letterman 15 years to air it. Censorship is offensive and it deprives everyone, but I'm glad I can finally see it and I miss him that much more.

To this day I think about what Bill would have to say about the shit that is going on now, and it's easy to imagine, because nothing has changed, the names the faces, but we still live in an evangelical nightmare, full of censorship and rampant marketing.

Also as an added bonus Bill recorded a music album under the name Marble Head Johnson and below are links to 3 of the songs, don't be surprised if they make it on the show next week.

The Wizards Have Landed
Chicks Dig Jerks
Lay of the Land

I can't find the entire CD for sale anywhere anymore, but Bill's excellent standup albums and DVD's are available at Sacred Cow Productions, run by his close friend Kevin Booth.

Don't put marbles in your nose!
Mr. Small is also a source of endless amusement. If you ever get the hankering I would suggest you check out his interests on his myspace page.

DJ Donatello was responsible for first exposing me to Home Movies several years ago and for that I owe him an unpayable debt. We are both devoted fans of Brendon and his shows, and I also foster an unhealthy interest in H. Jon Benjamin, the voice of Coach McGuirk.

Free Stickers

Ok so we at the LAN Party are not confused about Obama's energy policy or his completely ridonculous idea about using coal in a clean way, however free stickers are free stickers. We here at the LAN Party which is not a political party, YET, are very interested in free, and in case you can't think of any uses for free stickers then let us help you out.

Free stickers can be used as binding material for books or backpacks or to cover up rust spots on your 88 Buick. Stickers have magical properties which help your wounds heal, so if you trip and fall and bruise your knee, worry not! A free sticker is all you need, slap it on and the pain is gone. Can't keep those unruly bangs out of your face, don't waste your time with product, when a sticker will do just as well. A home invasion gone awry, forgot your ductape, well you never have to hear that relentless wail of hostages again when you've got free stickers in your pocket. Blackheads are easily cured with a free sticker from MoveOn.org. So don't wait get one today free shipping and all, no donation necessary.

We promise to keep you up to date on Free Stickers we discover, if you have any leads please let us know, free is awesome.

P.S. Think clean coal is possible because President Full Sentences says so? Well watch Burning The Future, a documentary that shows you what clean coal really looks like.

How to Rob an Armored Car

Obviously we have all thought about it, the economic climate being what it is. So it's not really surprising that someone with more ambition than the general slacker might write about it, perhaps even a whole book. Well thankfully for all of us Iain Levison the author of A Working Stiff's Manifesto, Since the Layoffs and Dog Eats Dog has stepped up and delivered what we were all thinking anyway. We at the Lan Party are big fans of Iain Levison, I even got a chance to interview him twice while doing another show on WIDR called The People's Power Hour. Iain writes like we feel, were not dumb but we are treated that way, and as the working class that is always struggling for money, through bureaucracy and corporate neglect for human welfare, he writes about things most of the world can relate to. Thankfully he does so with a sense of humor that is subtle, quick and most importantly honest, it is after all the only way to survive without loosing your mind.

So for all you working stiffs, here is a 20 page preview of How to Rob an Armored Car
http://www.facebook.com/pages/How-to-Rob-an-Armored-Car/115743927951?ref=nf

Here is the amazon link where you can pre-order the book, which should arrive Oct 1st.
http://www.amazon.com/How-Rob-Armored-Iain-Levison/dp/1569475997/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247159050&sr=8-1

And here is the blurb from Soho Press about the book.

In a dying Pennsylvania coal town, three friends are looking for a way out. Mitch is a rebellious malcontent whose bad attitude gets him fired from a chain big box store. Doug can identify any pill by sight and any ‘80s rock song by the first three notes but doesn’t understand credit scores. Kevin got married and had a kid too soon and is now on parole after serving jail time for growing marijuana. The three of them dabble in petty crime and believe they have a talent for it. They start by stealing a high-definition TV, then set their sights on bigger scores. Soon things begin to get out of hand.

Keep your fingers crossed, I'm going to try to get a hold of Iain and see if he wants to do an interview for the blog, stay tuned.

Fight for the Tuna!

WIDR's Barking Tuna Fest is coming up this fall, and the spot for the opening band is available! If you feel like trying out, all information is available in this nifty little flyer. In addition to all that information it happens to be completely 8-bitted (The LAN party are suckers for the pixels). Awesome!

Way to be topical!

In the spirit of being topical, we stumbled across a remix of Michael Jackson's Thriller done by Mochipet last night. While not only being awesome, it also happens to be completely and legitimately free. Enjoy!

Listen for it next week on the LAN Party!

Invasion of the nerdy-snatchers!

We had no clue how popular the internet was but now that we have discovered it, we think we will get along quite swimmingly.

We are DJ Starscream and DJ Donatello, we are the hosts of a very popular radio show called The LAN Party, a specialty show on WIDR 89.1 FM. WIDR is a student-run college radio station located on-campus at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. WIDR also operates a webstream so listeners all over the world can have the opportunity to experience Radio Evolution.
The LAN Party show plays every Tuesday night/Wednesday mornings from midnight to 2 a.m. Our playlists focus on the auditory aspects of movies, video games, and TV shows along with everything that could be considered nerdy and/or geeky. We also feature many laptop musicians and artists signed to internet record labels that are not normally highlighted over radio waves.
Our goal with this blog (aside from shameless self promotion) is to highlight that which we find in our internet meandering that is relevant to the show and using this new-fangled internet networking in the hopes of expanding our audience. So, with that in mind your two humble DJs would be as flattered as Princess Peach if you listened in (either through radio or the WIDR webstream) and offered feedback!
