This is another crazy week. Several papers due next week; one on the War of 1812, one on the link between media and crime and another where I have to apply Marxist socioeconomic theory to a film. I chose American Psycho. The link is rather obvious; so much so that I may get called out for taking the easy route. We'll see.

I get the feeling that the only types of weeks I will be having from now until graduation. I will try my damnedest to bring you a quality show every week. I was going to try something new on this episode but ran out of time, so tune in next week for this potentially career-ending experiment.

The good news this week is that Carl King gave the show a shout out and placed a link to this blog on his friends page. This is exciting news. I don't know if we'll gain any new listeners but I shall try to maintain whatever questionable standards I possess.

Classes started this week. Jack will be a very busy boy. 4 classes and 108 days separate me from a piece of paper that will perhaps land me a better paying job than the one I have now. Will the education gambit pay off? WHO KNOWS!

This was a pretty solid show. Lots of 8-bit and a track by a band that DJ GunRack simply goddamn hated, so I had to wait until he left the state to play it again. If you missed the show, you'll just have to figure out which track it is.

2012 could be the year for a lot of things to go wrong.

Thats right, folks. 2012 is upon us. Hide yo' kids. Hid yo' wife. Duck and cover.

I kicked off the year with a track from They Might Be Giants to get us all in a cheerful mood. That way we can ignore all the impending mayan-prophesied doom that will rain down from the sky.

But really, 2011 was a pretty swell year. I have some Big Events going on on 2012, so I hope it will also be a swell year. Graduation is a mere 4 months away. Pretty hard to believe. It will also mark the 6th year I've been involved with this show. Damn!

I'm excited to be in the studio for '12 and (maybe) beyond. Thanks for the calls, requests, and all-around support. Thats the kind of thing that keeps me trundling into the studio every week!

Surprise end-of-year reunion show!

I was treated to an unexpected surprise this week: DJ Gunrack returned to Kalamazoo for the holidays! I was able to smuggle him into the studio for the show tonight. Since it was the last show of 2011, we ripped off our own concept from 2010 and played our favorite tracks and artists of the year. The show ended up going a bit past the normal 2-hour length but we took that liberty since no one has a show after the show's timeslot and the overnight computer can get a bit repetitive if you've ever listened to it more than, well, once.

Hard to believe we've come to the end of another year. Gunrack has moved away and I'm hoping to follow in his footsteps and escape Kalamazoo sooner than later. I graduate in the spring and the future is uncertain after that point. Will I find a job? Will I get fired from WIDR for smuggling Gunrack into the studio? Will the world actually end in 2012? Tune in next year to find out!

The end of the year is nigh! Only one more broadcast until the new year. We marked this year's christmassacre with a few staples, some new tracks, then completely abandoned the concept in favor of the LAN Party's regular musical fare. We are nothing if not alarmingly inconsistent.

LAN Party christmas ideas:
- Listen to the podcast while doing your online shopping.
- Violate the Mall Santa.
- Contemplate castle doctrine and how it relates to a man coming down your chimney.

Those sharper ears out there may notice that I actually played a song after the Meshuggah track. If anyone happens to be curious, the last song of the set was Goblin Cock's "Beneath the island of misfit toys". I stumbled across it and thought it was appropriate for a holiday show. And I pretty much love any Rob Crow project.

Winter Blunderland

The snow season is upon us. Ice flakes rain down from the sky to wreak havoc with commuters and vertigo-stricken citizens. The only way to stay safe is to carry your portable hair dryer and blast the ice out of the sky! (this will probably end up being a fruitless battle).

This was a good show. I apologize to those of you who listen frequently. Several of the opening songs were...good. I was exacting some revenge for a terrible request last week. Lots of G.A.P.E.S. and some technical/prog metal thrown in for good measure.

Lots of news this week! If you read the facebook page, you may have noticed that I made the announcement that Henry Rollins will be coming to Kalamazoo to do a spoken-word engagement at the State Theatre. This was made possible by my bosses at WIDR. I am superfuckingexcited for this. I was lucky enough to see Rollins many years ago at the same venue and he is one of my personal idols. The details of the event can be found HERE.

A few new CDs in the rotation rack will be featured on the who in the coming weeks. Particularly of interest is the David Lynch CD. I'm looking forward to whatever freaky shit is on there. Some potential in some of the electronic releases as well. I will give them some further listening and decide.

I bought some parts for my bike and was able to visit it today for a brief moment. The bike is stored at my friend's new garage, Checkered Past Cycles. Located in the bustling metropolis of Galesburg, Michigan, the shop is sure to be a hangout for biker hooligans and felonious behavior. I'll fit right in. The FZ1 has some friends to hang out with over the winter:

I am feeling a bit under the weather today and that fact is probably revealed in the show. I felt that the song timing was a bit "off" compared to my more successful attempts at radio broadcasting. Oh well. The point of posting these shows is for both posterity and future mocking.

Its that time of year when the leaves turn colors and pumpkins are cruelly mutilated. Wine is consumed and masks are donned. Must be Peter Steele Tribute Week! This week's show focused on songs that pay homage to Peter Steele. Something called Halloween apparently shares the same time of year and it appears to be hogging most of the attention. Well, screw you, Halloween! This week is about Peter Steele and I'll never forget!

Following lacks week demonstration of what happens when I prepare nothing, this week's show featured a lot of really great music because I took some time to make a playlist. Seriously. I actually had so much material that I still have more great stuff in the queue for next week. And thats gawdamm amazing; I usually blow my load of good stuff within about the first hour. The Pinn Panelle track near the beginning and the BADBADNOTGOOD song at the end of the show are both covers. I'll let you figure out who they're covering for.

If you didn't like the Devin block of songs, accept my apologies. I'm very excited about accompanying DJ White Wizard to the Devin Townsend show in Grand Rapids. I predict much fun to be had. We shall rock and/or roll.

What a week! DJ White Wizard and I traveled to Grand Rapids to see They Might Be Giants at The Intersection. Jonathan Coulton opened the show and his set, while very good, was decidedly short. Kinda disappointing. They Might Be Giants was excellent. There was a puppet show, lots of humble-nerd-rock-star self-deprecation, and two encores! The trip was fraught with peril; we battled traffic jams and two instances of a dead car battery. Fear not however, for we were able to make it to Kalamazoo unharmed and victorious. We conquered that dead battery so hard it came back to life!

Speaking of The Intersection, I will be attending several upcoming shows. Helmet is playing on the 5th of October and Devin Townsend will be there on the 9th. DJ White Wizard will be joining me for the Devin Townsend concert. Exciting musical times after a musical drought all year.

I would have to concede that tonight's show was not as nerdified as shows in the past if you wanted to highlight the lack of chiptunes and GAPES. I apologize but I think this particular electronic and post-rock centric show was still nerdy in it's own right.

School has been in session for one week. My classes are promising so far. I've not yet received any parking tickets. The weather has presented more opportunity for hoodies than anticipated. As you can note, things are pretty swell.

I've been able to take the bike to class all week. This is bittersweet; the time to put it away for the winter will be sooner than later.

In addition to DJ Gun Rack's emailed contributions, this was a bit of a clearing-the-cache show. I've accumulated a bunch of unplayed songs leftover from shows in the recent past. I took the opportunity to ERADICATE THEM!

A whole bunch of people started occupying a popular area of Kalamazoo this week. They have to pay for parking and may get first-hand experience with alcohol abuse in the very near future. If you guessed the WMU campus, you're right. Pat yourself on the back with the hand not holding your backpack full of overpriced textbooks.

This is your humble DJ's senior year. Hard to believe it only took me 10 years to get a 4 year degree (...and they say miracles don't happen!) Since this could potentially be my last fall semester EVER, I'm pledging to bring you some top quality LAN Party this year.

This particular show was pretty strong if I do say so myself. The seminal Roommate From Hell track by the two MC's, Lars & Chris, started us off, Hugh Laurie was our GAPES for the evening, and Mr. Rogers finished it up from the rear. Ahem. Enjoy the back-to-school episode!

...of the Hitchhiker's Guide, anyway. Our ambitious endeavor has been finished to completion. (Theres gotta be a better way to say that!). It took a little more time than the original half-year estimate but whatever comes next should dovetail nicely with the beginning of the school year in two weeks.

This week's show was a bit electro-centric, which was not my intention at the onset. Huh. Guess things happened that way.

I'm coming to realize that as long as I'm alone in the studio, I need to do things to keep myself and you, the listener, entertained. I don't like talking at you about nothing, but I also don't like a two hour chunk of music thrown at you. I'd like to use some WIDR influence and try to do a few author, artist, musician interviews in the coming months. This is my senior year here at WMU, I don't want to squander away the resources I have available.

We are nearing the end of Gun Rack's Kalamazoo occupation. This is bittersweet and the future of The Lan Party is a tiny bit uncertain. Harvey's direction with which to take the show is -as of yet- undecided. Don't fret too much, Harvey has a few tricks up his sleeve. The show will most defintely go on.
There will be one or two more Gun Rack-centric shows so he can build a cache of material to shove upon potential radio employers in the south. LAN Party 3.0 will follow.

Archive.org is being a bit temperamental and uploading the shows is a frustrating endeavor. Should we upload them at all? I don't believe we ever ascertained whether or not people were utilizing the shows via this blog. Please let us know!

This podcast marks the 16th episode of Hitchhiker's Guide and in addition it was a solo show with only Harvey manning the mics. The studio gets a bit creepy this late at night with no one around. DJ Gun Rack is off exploring housing possibilities in a certain southern state called Georgia. I'll let him elaborate upon whence he returns.

This show featured the 14th installment of the Hitchhiker's Guide series. Following that was our t-shirt giveaway from Miles To Go Clothing. One of our faithful listeners, Jon From Ann Arbor, called in with the correct answer to our trivia question and won the shirt. Jealous, much?
The music was pretty damn good, as well. Highlights include El Chombo, Steve Mason, and Professor Elemental.

As promised; my eagerly anticipated review of Monty Python's Spamalot.

The Monty Python group are renown amongst British-humor aficionados world over. Thick-spectacle-bedecked youths everywhere dedicate themselves to rote line-memorization and awkward referential snark. There are even fossils and stars named after the original cast members, fer chrissake. In addition to the TV series, movies, and books, the group has crossed over into the world of the Broadway theater and do their best to push the theater into their surreal, absurdist world. The musical comedy Spamalot is a rendition of the 1975 classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I don't want to spoil too much for the uninitiated, so suffice it to say that both the movie and stage production are essentially about the Knights of the Round Table on a quest to find the Holy Grail. King Arthur, Sir Robin, Galahad, and Lancelot all make appearances in addition to the movie staples such as the Knights Who Say Ni, the Black Knight, Taunting Frenchmen and the Swamp Castle crew. Genuinely funny things happen, dick-and-fart jokes are made, and everyone has an uproarious time. For what its worth, your humble author thinks that most classic British comedy is far and beyond superior to the current schlock of comedy movies.

This is a musical, so I expected some gay-old-time song-and-dance. I sorely underestimated their dedication to the craft. There are a lot of song and dance numbers. You may not understand me here; there are A. LOT. OF. SONGS. The original movie classics are all included in addition to a plethora new numbers. This may or may not sound enticing.

The stage version is obviously designed to appeal to a current audience; pop-culture references are numerous. Jokes are made at the expense of drug-addled divas, homosexuals, Jews, and Finland. Fear not however; irony is heavy and tongue is firmly planted in cheek. In addition, over the course of act I and throughout act II, the production and cast become aware of themselves and the audience, creating a metafictional theater situation. Many of the song numbers include musical allusions and subsequent mocking of other successful theater productions. Knees were slapped and chortles were uttered. A note for you daring types: sit in an aisle seat on the first floor and you may be subjected to a moment of audience participation.

Now comes the time to get down to the critical brass tacks: choreography and acting quality surpassed my (rather nonexistent) expectations. A standout was Caroline Bowman, the actress portraying The Lady Of The Lake. Her singing abilities were amazing. No hyperbole. Sound quality was excellent but perhaps I am a bit naive to theater sound expectations; my ears have been repeatedly raped by various metal acts. All lyrics were understandable and crystal clear. The stage-sets were faithful to the designs of the movie, all the way down to their intentional flaws. In fact, the only critical grenade I can lob is at Miller Auditorium for their seating. The seats are pretty awful, even for my slender buttocked frame.

Confession time; I am not the world's largest Monty Python fan and I am most definitely NOT a musical theater kind of gentleman. Despite involvement with the high school drama team and my family's well-meaning patronage of the playhouse on several occasions throughout my childhood, the theater just isn't for me. Musicals in particular. Did Spamalot's wily charm convert me into a season ticket holder? Well, no. But thanks to a generous friend with an extra ticket I was able to give it a try. I left Miller after having a genuinely good time due to the quality of the cast and humor. I highly doubt I would have been able to say the same had the show been one of the many interminable musicals that have graced the stage at Miller in the past.

The Kalamazoo dates have all concluded, but Monty Python's Spamalot is playing several nearby dates if you're interested in attending.

Back in the day, DJ White Wizard attempted (over time) to play all of the installments of the audiobook version of The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy. I admit its been so long that I have forgotten whether or not he completed the series but I seem to recall that he had not.

Seeing that both of your current LAN Party hosts are also Douglas Adams fans, we are giving some serious thought to attempting this a second time. It would take at least half a year if not more before Primary Phase 1 is completed. If this is something you'd like to hear every week or not, let us know.

Exam week can be hellish. DJ Gun Rack is living a technicolor nightmare. Harvey Mushman is enduring yet another barrage of criminal justice essays.
Given the circumstances this week, the show went amazingly well. No one was shot outside the studio, no DJs were outed as having false credentials, and the show didn't have a narrow focus on any one music style. Damn fine broadcasting.

Studio Echoes

Good 'ol DJ Gun Rack is down in South Carolina experimenting with new gun rack designs and accessorizing his duelly with some chrome and stack pipes. He may make it back in time to do the show but lets not count on it. Slow and stylish is his usual traveling velocity.

What this means is that Harvey will be in the studio all by his lonesome. A horrible tendency to procrastinate coupled with a not inconsiderable workload from school this semester will most likely lead to some great on-air gaffs. Remember that the request line can be used for threats, too.
Keep it tuned to WIDR and listen in tonight at midnight to hear what explodes, malfunctions, or acts furtive when asked piercing questions.

Anniversary Podcast!

Hard to believe, but this show marks the 1-year anniversary of our podcasts. We'd like to say we've grown. We've certainly (only recently) perfected the podcrafting session. LAN Party history gets a bit fuzzy over the years but this is quite a milestone for us. Stay alert and hyper-vigilant for the podcast's terrible-two period.
Honestly, halloween is just another day of the year where we're tempted to accelerate tooth decay with awful, calorie packed candy-beans. It happened to be the first week we decided to hit the “record” button and save the show for generations to come.

It feels lonely without the cast of The Truth to keep us company while we're busy podcrafting but we'll eventually regrow our hard, calloused perspective that frightens strangers and creates a hostile environment.
We're continually finding more CDs in rotation that we enjoy and feel the need to share with you. This influx of music is quite welcome, as the studio pickin's were rather slim in years past. A solid block of Mushman's portion of the show was all music in rotation. Exciting.

We heard through the grapevine that the webstream is still down. We apologize for our interweb listeners. If we knew how to fix it, we would. Instead, we'll just yell at all of the Apple computers in the studio as if they're the problem (Well, they are a source of problems. Just not this time.)

I won't pretend that I'm surprised, when I saw the Miracle video one of my first thoughts was, how is this any different from Christian Rap. This is one of those lack luster victories, as I don't give a shit either way, it's far too late. Juggalos already are having kids and are spreading the word of their lord god apparently. I truly wonder how they feel about it, I would feel betrayed, but that's me and I feel betrayed when someone get's my order wrong at a restaurant. Which by the way does not happen very often because I enunciate.

I would like to at this point say that if Science does somehow ruin the magick then how does knowing god did it all keep the veil?

I suppose if I was a juggalo I would use this opportunity to talk about how positive a message it has been all along and that it now has given me the tools to be inclusive and not worry about what religion someone is or why they might be trying to convert me.

What a show!

We noticed that the volume on the call-line phone was turned down about halfway through the show. If you called for a request and we didn't answer, don't take it personal. We also may have gotten that Protomen request incorrect. The lesson your DJs took away from this is to WRITE THINGS DOWN.

We kept the talking to a minimum and the rawking to the MAX! Lots of new music, and we attempted to throw in a few spooky sounding songs in anticipation of the 2010 Halloween show. Crispin Hellion Glover was our G.A.P.E.S. artist of the week. That was spooky.

A sad bit of news; The Truth with Don Cheadle will be ending next week. I'm sure Don has an especially good show for us all. You can listen to us if for no other reason than to warm up for The Truth.

October is almost upon us like an advancing stranger in the night. I have my bear-mace at the ready. The good news about October is that the end of the month will be the anniversary of our podcasts. I, for one, am pretty excited about having made it this far. I will have to do some checking but next week should be our 50th podcasted show. Crazy.

After much wringing of hands and time spent by the mailbox, the GAPES stickers have finally arrived. We literally have stacks and stacks of these things so if you're interested in getting some of this goodness just let us know.

GAPES, an acronym for Great Acting Persons Entertaining Sonically, was coined by MC Hut during his reign over the show. The GAPES segment of the show is when we play music from public figures not immediately known for their musical contributions. We have continued the tradition by bringing you all of these tunes for your consideration weekly. Last night's GAPES segment featured none other than Klaus Kinski, the heralded actor. His German spoken-word-over-music was, to our ears, brilliant. Listen to the show to hear that song, if for no other reason.

The stickers appear to be very durable and of high quality, suggesting that sticking them on an automobile or similar environmental circumstance is feasible without the sticker degrading quickly. The arrival of these stickers is going to force your humble DJ to wash his vehicle a little sooner than it's annual spraydown schedule calls for. Oh well. These will hold the rusty pieces together nicely.

A caller today threw vinegar at us, unfortunately this solidified our resolve that the update we recently installed was the right move. The show was getting slow, our cache was filling up with vats of dirty sponges. We decided to take the plunge, we inserted the dick sorry I mean disc into the slot and away we went. Well we enjoy all three periods of Pink Floyd so I feel like if you accept that this is Radio Evolution, not Radio Status Quo, then perhaps the current phase isn't for you, but it's better than staying the same for us.

Hey all you Kalamazoo residents! Wanna check out an awesome band that has no resemblance to the current shite on top 40 radio?

Russian Circles will be at The Strutt on thursday, Aug. 12th. Doors at 8pm, show at 9pm. The band was scheduled to play at The Strutt over the winter but were forced to cancel due to a pathetic excuse for a blizzard that made people scared of driving for no good reason. I may or may not still be upset about this.
Tickets are only 12 dollars if you buy them in person, 15 if you buy them online. Why the tickets cost more online is a mystery I will likely never solve without first getting really pissed off about the gall of most companies but I will admit that it's better than the nearly doubling of the ticket price that ticketmaster gouges out of it's customers (this doesnt make it acceptable, just better than ticketmaster).

Anyhoo, I shall be there with my ladyfriend and most likely a few other comrades. Yes, I do have a ladyfriend despite the myriad factors suggesting otherwise. My co-DJ may also attend if he has the time. I will try to convince him.

As always, the radio show will air on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. This week will be installment #2 of our new format. I've finally been putting my new fancy computer to good use and made a few liners and promos for the show. Keep an ear out for these little gems interspersed with the music.

So with that in mind here is the story with little additions by me in red.

New York, NY, United States (AHN) - U.S. authorities have shut down several websites for allegedly hosting pirated copies of Hollywood movies and TV shows. News of the seizures came just a week after the Obama administration announced an enforcement plan for dealing with theft of intellectual property. (Obama is in the pocket of the MPAA/RIAA, but then it's not really surprising since this is the same guy that as one of his first acts chose to extend the patriot act, which is an act that uses the fear of gnomes who may attack our homes as a means to conduct illegal search and seizure, to help warrant these fears, what a tidy cycle)

A Manhattan federal court issued warrants on behalf of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York that demanded the closure of seven sites: TVshack.net, Movies-Links.tv, FilesPump.com, Now-Movies.com, PlanetMoviez.com, ThePirateCity.org and ZML.com. I don't know most of these sites, but I do know FilesPump.com was literally a specialized search engine that searched direct download sites for keywords you entered, I suppose google will be the next to get seized by the customs? Oh wait they are all in bed together trying to slow down internet for us ORDINARY WORKING PEOPLE, while speeding it up for us CORPORATE ASSHOLES.

The websites are listed to computers located domestically in Colorado, Florida, Illinois and internationally in the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Oh so that's why customs were involved in electronic transactions, because we now control the whole world, I see.

U.S. Attorney Preet Corporate Shill Bharara said in a statement, "Criminal copyright infringement occurs on a massive scale over the Internet, and reportedly not factually results in billions of dollars in losses to the U.S. economy. Very good play up the economy dollar because we have such a shitty one at the moment due in no way to piracy but due completely to corporate greed That translates into lost jobs and real hardships for ordinary working people. I could see how ordinary working people who work over 50 hours a week or don't have a job at all might not want to spend 20 dollars on a shitty movie. That's why we took today's action. If your business model is movie piracy, your story will not have a happy ending." Isn't it weird that he sounds almost like the good guy instead of just a corporate shill with some really bad data? Here is the data that does not make it in to their calculations that come directly from the MPAA and RIAA which are no doubt independent in their opinion with no bias at all, anyhoo so billions lost on sales, if they assume that if people couldn't see these shitty things for free that they would just buy them based on summaries provided by the same industry that makes them. For example if I were to download a Metallica album which I would never do, but let's pretend that I felt that I wanted to give them another shot, so the RIAA would calculate that as a loss of a CD sale, unfortunately I listen to this album and find out that it is bile. OH NO, what now, oh wait it's not a problem, I delete the horrific bile off my computer and take a deep breath of relief. The important bit is that I wouldn't have bought the CD without a good listen first. We no longer live in the times of hey here's the single hey trust us the rest of the CD is just as good, and really it wouldn't be a problem if you could return opened movies and CD's to the store by simply saying, well it's a piece of shit and don't want to listen to it anymore. However that's not the business plan is it, the plan is to pretend that shitty movies with no replay value need to be made with massive budgets for hot actors and no writers and then we all like sheep have to go out and before we can word of mouth each other how bad it is, shit they already got our money and got away. Well technology has advanced beyond that, and shutting down sites that if anything help promote projects that would never even a single sale is like shooting your self in the foot. Just because they throw lot's of money at something does not mean it's good or legal or anything else.

Visitors landing on the aforementioned web pages will now be redirected to a page that notifies them the sites have been seized by the government. However, after the seizures were announced four of the sites appeared to still be working properly. This may have something to do with them not having any authority on the internet, I'm really baffled by this land grab the U.S. Government is trying to pull, they are trying to destroy Net Neutrality with one hand to help corporations and with the other they are treating the ordinary folks who are out of a job because they no longer need all those grips on the CGI shitfests like Transfuckingformers.

Bharara believes Belief is fun, unfortunately it also has no proof seizing the websites will have a deterrent effect among people who would watch movies illegally. I'm glad the illegal movie watching hasn't had an effect on hollywood making better movies, so I highly doubt it will work in reverse, but hey it's cute watching the government trying to flex it's muscle and better yet watching a democrat president buying into the lies. Good job lobbies, those common folks you so give a shit about sure appreciate being called criminals, I just know they will change their ways and buy up all them shitty seasons of 24 now.

I think what bothers me more than anything is how arrogant the industry is, it assumes it's product is worth what they say it's worth, but it rarely is, very rarely. I can count how many movies I saw in theaters this year, and this isn't because I saw them online illegaly it's because I was trully excited by the plot and the actors and the director and I went sometimes out of my way to see these movies. I can count them on the fingers of one hand, because one of the movies I saw ended up feeling like a let down, because the trailer portrayed it as something it wasn't, now how many fucking times does that happen? Again it does not matter and isn't ever calculated because the key is to get people in the doors the first week and then completely forget about it and move on to the next shitty plothole.

Time for a change.

As you may have surmised, the recent symbolic death of Fidel and Raul signals the beginning of a new era in the history of The LAN Party. But fear not, for as the Good Book says, "How can I tell that the past isn't a fiction designed to account for the discrepancy between my immediate physical sensations and my state of mind?" As we figure out what to do with those pesky leftover symoblic bodies (wheres Dexter when you need him?), let us regale you with a history of The LAN Party leading up to this point.

DJ White Wizard conceptualized and started the show sometime in 2005. Along with his cohort, MC Hut, the show enjoyed various timeslot changes and the addition of yours truly (then operating under guest status and known as MC Michelangelo) as well as the occasional appearance by DJ Donatello. Around fall of 2006, White Wizard departed the show and left me to fill his not inconsiderable presence. Along with DJ Donatello, I have continued to occupy the timeslot and provide music to you, the WIDR listener. At some point we changed our DJ names to Fidel and Raul Podcastro. I have to admit that it pains me to abandon those names, for they were excellent names, but both of us have realized it is time for a change and the old format as well as those names are behind us.

We have been stewards of the format White Wizard created. In this sense, the show has not been our own. My co-DJ was apt in his remark that we operate as employees, not the boss. I would be lying if I were to tell you that every week's show has been an absolute joy. In some aspects the show has begun to feel a bit like a chore. This isn't a good situation for myself, my co-DJ, or our listeners. Consider the show bought-out and to be under new management. Agressive expansion is in order.
In the spirit of WIDR's motto, Radio Evolution, we are allowing the show to evolve into a similar yet different presentation that we are excited to bring to you every week. The name of the show is still fitting, as we are still two dorks behind computer screens playing a unique mix of music for you every week. Perhaps a slight change is in order. The LAN Party2.0 or something similar? We'll see.

Another aspect of the show that needs addressing is the rather marked decline in seat time for co-DJ formerly known as Raul. After all, in the history of our involvement with WIDR he was here first. If we are to make this work, we should both get fair time in that captain's chair. His endless combing of the internet yields many, many awesome songs that deserve playtime. I look forward to what he will choose to play every week. I hope our listeners feel the same.

Many of the artists we played on the previous iteration of The LAN Party will still be present, for we love the music as much as you do. (Who in their right mind could abandon Flight of the Conchords, Brendon Small, MC Chris and all the others? Not us!) What we would like to add to the show is more progressive, engaging, thought-provoking music that may not be labeled outright as nerdy but is still music we hope you will appreciate.

Kalamazoo disc jockeys dead after apparent suicide-by-cop

[Flagstaff, Az] Kalamazoo Disc Jockeys Fidel and Raul Podcastro (no relation) were killed in an apparent suicide-by-cop scheme on Highway US40 in the early hours of Thursday morning. The two Michigan residents embarked on a non-stop trip heading west to California following the broadcast of their radio show, The LAN Party, on Western Michigan University's independent station, 89.1fm WIDR. The men departed Kalamazoo at approximately 3:00a.m. Wednesday morning after posting the podcast of that night's show to their website. Heading westbound on US40 between Winslow and Flagstaff, Arizona State Police stopped the vehicle at a citizenship checkpoint. The men failed to produce any legal documents whatsoever. Background checks were duly made. Homeland Security confirmed that the two men were illegal aliens that operated under the ruse of upstanding citizenry while evading immigration officers. Once realizing their gambit was lost, the men fled the scene at a high rate of speed. Police engaged the suspects and employed the PIT Maneuver in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle. The maneuver was unsuccessful but apparently enraged the two fleeing DJs so much that they stopped their car and engaged police in a gunfight. Officer Harold "Harry" Sweatback was killed in the interaction. Following the exchange, the men again fled the scene and continued heading west on US40. Roadblocks were set up outside of Flagstaff in anticipation of the speeding car reaching the city. Tire spikes laid across the road were able to deflate the tires on both the suspect's car as well as the police cruisers behind them. The resulting loss of control of all vehicles involved led to a collision that caused the vehicles to roll. While upside down in a ditch, Fidel and Raul again engaged police with firearms until both suspects were shot and killed. Toxicology reports made on-scene suggest nothing out of the ordinary. An autopsy is to follow later in the week.
Initial time-line construction suggests that the two men stole a 1969 Dodge Charger on Tuesday evening after tricking the owner into letting them take the collector vehicle on a test drive. Owner of the vehicle, Paul Boognish, responded to our reporter: "Yep, theys [sic] drove off with my baby. Mite sad, it is. Oh well, I was too depressed to drive it these days anyway, what with the economy and the oil spill and all ." After departing Kalamazoo, the two carjackers headed west in an apparent attempt to beat all known distance-time records set between Michigan and California. The stolen Charger was selected for it's capacious gas tank as well as it's timeless style and accelerative properties. Credit card receipts from gas stations suggest that the car stopped less than 6 times before reaching Arizona and their subsequent death. The men placed several calls to friends and family members while eluding the police. All witnesses contacted by our reporter suggest that the two felt no remorse for their actions. Friend Nate Ditka adds: "Doesn't surprise me. Those two were in this country on expired student visas and were looking for a way out. Oh, and they were into gay shit, too."
More news to follow on this development as more information is released by the police and the medical examiner.
